Local Teachers Honored at Prestigious State Event
Two Parish Educators from Ascension Parish, Olivia Francois and Tante Poche, received top honors at the 2026 Louisiana Educator Excellence Awards, held at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. The Louisiana Department of Education, in collaboration with Dream Teachers, hosted the 19th annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Awards Gala to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of education.
Francois was named the Louisiana New Teacher of the Year, while Poche earned the title of Middle School Teacher of the Year. Their recognition places them among the state’s most dedicated and impactful educators. The event, attended by state officials and education leaders, honored teachers and administrators from across Louisiana for their achievements and commitment to student success.
Spotlight on Ascension’s Exemplary Educators
Olivia Francois, a graduate of Dutchtown High Schools returned to her alma mater to teach civics after completing her studies. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from Columbia University and a master’s degree in education from Vanderbilt University. Her return to Dutchtown represents a full-circle moment, bringing back national academic experience to serve her local community.
Tante Poche has spent the last decade as a science teacher at Gonzales Middle School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in science from Dillard University and a master’s degree in public health from Florida A&M University. Her years of dedication to middle school education and passion for science were key factors in her recognition.
Ascension Parish Public Schools celebrated both educators through a heartfelt social media post, stating, “Their stories reflect the passion and promise of those who choose to teach in Ascension. We are proud to celebrate all who dedicate themselves to shaping the future through education.”
Celebrating Statewide Educational Excellence
In addition to Francois and Poche’, several other educators across Louisiana were recognized for their exceptional leadership. Regena Hartley Beard from the Zachary Community School District was named Louisiana Teacher of the Year, while Justin Wax from Livingston Parish was awarded Principal of the Year. Other statewide honors included Brooklynn Johnson-Botley from Allen Parish as Early Childhood Teacher of the Year and Devonda Whittington-Warren from Tangipahoa Parish as Early Childhood Leader of the Year.
Division-level Teacher of the Year awards were presented to Ali Romero Angelle (Elementary, St. Martin Parish), Aaron Riffe Beaubouef (High School, Jefferson Davis Parish), and, of course, Tante Poche’ (Middle School, Ascension Parish). Principal awards went to Brandon Singleton (Elementary, St. Landry Parish), Jennifer Burris (Middle School, Bossier Parish), and Dr. Anna Faye Caminita (High School, Tangipahoa Parish).
Speaking at the event, State Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley emphasized the importance of quality teaching, stating, “Student success doesn’t happen by accident. It takes talented, determined educators who are focused on results.”
