Summer Camp Registration Now Open

The Chicago Park District has officially opened registration for its 2025 summer programs, with camps filling up quickly across the city. Parents are now able to sign up their children for day camps and other seasonal activities, including programs located on both the west and east sides of California Avenue. In addition, registration for gymnastics centers began at noon on the same day, offering more options for families seeking summer activities.

Day camps are scheduled to begin on June 23, while other summer programs will start earlier, on June 16. With a broad range of programs designed to engage children and provide enriching experiences throughout the summer months, the Park District is expecting high participation once again this year.

Program Fees Increase to Pre-Pandemic Levels

This year’s summer camp registration comes with a slight increase in fees. The Chicago Park District confirmed that camp costs have been adjusted to reflect rising operational expenses and a return to pre-pandemic pricing. A Park District spokesperson explained that camp fees had been significantly reduced in 2020 to assist families facing economic hardship during the COVID-19 crisis. However, the new 2025 budget outlines a “modest” increase to restore fees to sustainable levels.

According to the Park District, the maximum rate for summer camps this year will be $4.00 per hour, while the average hourly cost across programs is estimated at $1.39. Despite the adjustments, officials emphasized that affordability remains a priority. Financial assistance is available for qualifying families, ensuring that no child is denied participation due to cost concerns.

These fee changes aim to balance accessibility with the rising costs of maintaining quality programming and staffing for the summer.

Lifeguard Positions Open with Competitive Pay

As the Chicago Park District prepares for the busy summer season, it is also actively recruiting lifeguards to staff local pools and lakefront beaches. Applications are currently open for interested candidates, with training sessions set to begin in May. The role includes a required skills test, and successful applicants will earn $19.75 per hour.

This hiring push comes on the heels of a successful 2024 season, during which the Park District overcame a long-standing lifeguard shortage for the first time in years. Officials hope to maintain that momentum by attracting a new wave of lifeguards to help ensure safe and enjoyable aquatic experiences for Chicago residents.

The Chicago Park District summer initiatives—ranging from youth camps to seasonal employment opportunities—aim to provide valuable services to the community while addressing budgetary and operational realities. With registration now live and preparations underway, families are encouraged to act quickly to secure their spots and explore financial aid options if needed.
