The U.S. Department of Education is expanding its investigations into reports of discrimination on six additional campuses across the country. Tulane University, Union College, Cobb County School District, University of Cincinnati, Santa Monica College, and Montana State University have been added to the list of schools being scrutinized by the Department’s Office for Civil Rights.
Antisemitism, Anti-Muslim Sentiments, Anti-Arab Discrimination
This move comes as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to address the concerning surge in reports of antisemitism, anti-Muslim sentiments, anti-Arab discrimination, and other forms of bias on both college and K-12 school campuses. The rise in incidents has been noted since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.
While the Department of Education did not specify the nature of the alleged discrimination under investigation, statements from at least three of the schools shed light on the incidents. Cobb County School District in Georgia is being investigated for a reported “anti-Muslim incident” based on a single complaint. A district spokesperson emphasized the district’s commitment to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Assaults against Tulane Students
Tulane University, located in Louisiana, reported an incident of discrimination occurring at a rally organized by a non-recognized group. The university clarified that the event took place on public property adjacent to the campus but beyond its control. Following assaults against Tulane students and a police officer, the university increased campus security and antisemitism awareness training.
Union College in New York is facing an Investigation
Union College in New York is facing an investigation related to a claim of discrimination toward Jewish students. The complainant alleges that the college failed to respond adequately to harassment incidents in October and November. Union College remains confident that its responses align with established policies and procedures.
Six Schools join at Least nine others currently under Investigation Schools
The University of Cincinnati, Santa Monica College, and Montana State University have not yet responded to inquiries about their respective investigations. These six schools join at least nine others currently under investigation concerning Title VI, a law prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in federally funded institutions or programs. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona indicated in a previous interview with ABC News that more investigations may follow as incidents continue to arise nationwide.
