On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Baylor University in Waco, Texas, issued an urgent emergency alert, warning of a potentially dangerous situation on campus. The alert, shared across official university communication platforms, directed students, faculty, and visitors to immediately seek secure shelter and stay away from doors and windows. The university emphasized that this was not a drill.
The message read, “[BAYLOR ALERT] Dangerous Situation on Waco Campus! Seek secure shelter now! Stay away from doors & windows. THIS IS NOT A DRILL. More info to follow.” As the alert spread, students and staff took cover, and activities on campus came to a halt.
Baylor University Police Pursuit Sparks Safety Concerns
The situation was linked to a police pursuit that began shortly before noon. Sergeant Ryan Howard from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed that the incident was not an active shooter situation. According to DPS, troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Kia SUV traveling northbound on Interstate 35 near mile marker 325, just south of Waco.
When the vehicle failed to stop, a chase ensued and continued northbound. The suspects exited at Bagby Avenue, where the driver and two passengers abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot near the university campus. This led authorities to believe that the suspects could pose a threat to public safety, prompting the university to issue the emergency alert.
As of the initial report, all three individuals had not been taken into custody. Law enforcement agencies were actively searching the area, and university officials refrained from releasing further details about the potential danger or whether any injuries had occurred.
Threat Resolved and Campus Reopens
Later in the afternoon, Baylor University announced via its official social media account on X (formerly Twitter) that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted. The university confirmed that there was no longer any threat to campus safety and that normal operations could resume. Authorities reported that at least one suspect involved in the earlier pursuit had been apprehended.
Although full details of the incident are still being investigated, the swift response from both law enforcement and university officials helped ensure the safety of the campus community. No injuries were reported during the event, and local police continue their investigation into the matter.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt communication and preparedness in managing public safety concerns at educational institutions. Baylor University is expected to review the event and response protocols in the coming days.
