University of Michigan President Santa Ono has announced plans to step down from his current role as he prepares to take on a new opportunity in Florida. In a letter released by the Office of the President, Ono shared that he has been named the sole finalist for the presidency at the University of Florida. Pending official approval from the Florida Board of Governors, Ono expects to begin his new position later this summer.
“I have been selected as the sole finalist for the presidency of the University of Florida, and once the appointment is approved by their Board of Governors, I expect to assume that role,” Ono stated. He confirmed that he has notified Kathy White, Chair of the University of Michigan Board of Regents, of his intention to leave.
A Heartfelt Farewell to the Michigan Community
Ono expressed deep appreciation for his time at the University of Michigan and the connections he and his wife, Wendy, have made during their tenure. “This decision was not made lightly, given the deep bond Wendy and I have formed with this extraordinary community,” he wrote. “The University of Michigan — and the State of Michigan — have forever captured my heart. It has been a profound privilege to be part of this extraordinary community and this remarkable state.”
Ono began his term as president of the University of Michigan in October 2022. Although his tenure was relatively brief, he quickly became a well-regarded figure within the university community, known for his accessibility and commitment to student success, academic excellence, and innovation.
Ensuring a Smooth Leadership Transition
As he prepares for his departure, Ono emphasized the importance of a smooth transition. He assured the university community that he will be working closely with the Board of Regents to ensure continuity and stability in leadership. “In the weeks ahead, I will work closely with the Chair of the Board of Regents to ensure a smooth and seamless transition,” Ono said in his letter.
The University of Michigan has not yet named an interim president or shared plans for a permanent replacement. However, with the announcement of Ono’s upcoming departure, the university is expected to begin its search for a new leader in the near future.
Ono’s move marks a significant leadership shift at one of the nation’s leading public universities, and his departure will likely be felt deeply by many in the campus community. As the University of Florida prepares to welcome a new president, the University of Michigan now faces the task of finding a successor to continue the institution’s legacy of academic and research excellence.
