  • Virginia Tech Record Gift lands a record $75 million donation.
  • Athletics receives the majority of the funding.
  • Honors College programs gain major expansion support.

Virginia Tech has received a record-breaking $75 million commitment from an anonymous four-generation Hokie family, with most of the funding supporting athletics and a significant portion expanding Honors College programs, university officials announced Thursday.

The gift is the largest commitment in Virginia Tech’s history and arrives as the university seeks to strengthen its athletic competitiveness while expanding innovative academic opportunities. The majority of the funding will support athletics initiatives, including the Invest to Win strategy and the newly established Hokie Ventures organization.

“This historic commitment reflects extraordinary confidence in Virginia Tech’s rising potential in athletics and impactful scholarship,” Virginia Tech President Tim Sands said in a statement.

Athletics Initiative Receives Major Financial Boost

University leaders said the Virginia Tech Record Gift marks a major milestone for Invest to Win, a strategic initiative introduced in September to strengthen Virginia Tech’s position in the rapidly changing landscape of NCAA Division I athletics.

The athletic portion of the gift includes unrestricted funding for use at the discretion of the athletic director, support for Invest to Win programs, and additional resources for Hokie Ventures, a nonprofit corporation recently approved by the university’s Board of Visitors.

Officials said a large share of the athletics funding is endowed, creating a permanent source of financial support through investment returns.

Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said the commitment will accelerate the department’s long-term plans.

“This extraordinary commitment is a powerful statement about where Virginia Tech Athletics is headed and what is possible when Hokie Nation comes together behind a shared vision,” Babcock said.

The Virginia Tech Record Gift far surpasses previous university records. Virginia Tech’s largest earlier commitments totaled $50 million each and were announced in 2018, 2021, and 2023. The university’s previous largest athletics gift was a $20 million commitment announced in December 2025.

The announcement comes as Virginia Tech conducts a search for a new athletic director. Babcock is set to move into an emeritus advisory role on July 1.

Head football coach James Franklin said the funding would help support recruiting, player development, and long-term program success.

“This transformative commitment will have a tremendous impact on our football program and the young men who wear the Virginia Tech uniform,” Franklin said.

Honors College Expansion Gains New Support

Part of the Virginia Tech Record Gift commitment will fund new opportunities within the Honors College, building on the success of the Calhoun Honors Discovery Program.

The interdisciplinary program brings together students from fields including engineering, business, science, humanities, and public policy to collaborate on real-world challenges with faculty and external partners.

The initiative was launched through a $20 million gift from alumnus David Calhoun in 2018 and has gained national attention for its approach to higher education.

Honors College Dean Becky Bott said the new funding would help expand access to collaborative learning experiences.

“The Calhoun Honors Discovery Program inspired a bold rethinking of what higher education can look like,” Bott said.

University officials said the donation continues a period of strong fundraising momentum. During the last fiscal year, Virginia Tech recorded its highest-ever five-year average for new gifts and commitments. In February, about 25,000 donors contributed nearly $17.8 million during the university’s Giving Day campaign.

Senior Vice President for Advancement Tom Wamsley said the latest Virginia Tech Record Gift reflects confidence in the university’s long-term vision.

“This extraordinary commitment raises our sights even further,” Wamsley said.
