Yongsan District formally accelerated its campaign to secure designation as Seoul’s first Special International Education Zone with the opening of the Yongsan Global Education Support Center. District officials said the facility will serve as the administrative Seoul global education hub for new education programs focused on global leadership, digital skills and cultural understanding.
The district, located in central Seoul, is home to numerous foreign embassies and multicultural communities. Officials said those characteristics make it well positioned to develop education programs with an international focus.
“Education is the most valuable investment we can make for future generations and a key asset that determines a city’s long-term competitiveness,” Yongsan District Mayor Kim Kyung-dae said. “Through the Yongsan Global Education Support Center, we are building an environment where students can expand their horizons on the global stage.”
Center Expands AI And Global Leadership Programs
District officials said the Seoul global education hub will offer programs that go beyond traditional language education. Its Global Leader School will host Model United Nations activities where students debate international issues while learning civic responsibility and using artificial intelligence tools.
Officials said AI-powered language platforms also will be introduced to help students strengthen communication skills alongside critical thinking and global awareness.
The Seoul global education hub also will provide university admissions counseling, academic planning and psychological support. District officials said the services are intended to make educational guidance more accessible to students who may not have access to private tutoring.
District Seeks Model For Future Education
Yongsan officials said the initiative reflects a broader effort to integrate international education into the public school experience rather than treating it as a separate activity. They said the district hopes the approach will better prepare students for an increasingly interconnected global economy.
If the district receives Special International Education Zone designation, officials said the Seoul global education hub could serve as a model for other metropolitan districts seeking to modernize education through international engagement and technology.
A spokesperson for Yongsan District said the district plans to build on its concentration of embassies and diverse international communities to strengthen opportunities for local students.
“Our goal is clear: leverage the area’s unique concentration of embassies and foreign cultures to prepare local students for an increasingly global economy,” the spokesperson said.
