The U.S. Department of Education has been called upon to investigate potential violations of civil rights at UCLA following a series of protests that resulted in hundreds of arrests. Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur, a Democrat, spearheaded the call for an immediate investigation into whether Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was breached during the events at UCLA. Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, and Zbur emphasized the need to safeguard the rights of all students, including Jewish students, from physical harm and verbal abuse.

Eli Tsives, a UCLA freshman, shared his experience of being blocked from entering his classroom, capturing the tense atmosphere on campus. “I deserve to go here. I pay tuition. This is our school,” Tsives asserted in a video recording of the incident, which showed him being obstructed by a group of individuals identified as pro-Palestinian protesters.
Videos circulating online also captured a protester brandishing a taser during a confrontation with a pro-Israeli demonstrator, underscoring the volatile nature of the protests. Zbur emphasized the importance of distinguishing between protected speech and actions that incite violence or intimidation, calling for accountability and consequences for those responsible.
The Assemblymember urged both the U.S. Department of Education and the UC Board of Regents to launch comprehensive investigations into the handling of security during the protests and subsequent incidents. He emphasized that while the right to free speech and peaceful protest are fundamental, they must not extend to violence, harassment, or intimidation targeting individuals or groups based on their beliefs or affiliations.
