Student’s Vocational Journey and STEM Advocacy

Camryn Moran, a senior at McCann Technical School, shared her educational journey at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the school’s new HVAC lab. Despite discouragement from her grade school teachers, who believed vocational education would hinder her chances of attending selective colleges, Moran pursued her interests at McCann. “I saw this unique style of education as a way to broaden my horizons,” Moran remarked, highlighting how her decision to attend McCann was pivotal in shaping her into a well-rounded individual.

Having completed a STEM education,computer-assisted drawing course, Moran is now proficient in complex programs used at colleges. Her story is one that resonated with the audience, embodying the benefits of STEM education, which was a central focus of the day’s event.

The Role of STEM in Vocational Education

State Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler attended the event as part of the state’s STEM Week initiative, which promotes the theme “STEM Starts Now.” The week-long campaign emphasizes the importance of STEM education in vocational and technical schools across Massachusetts. Tutwiler, who had previously attended STEM-related events earlier in the day, expressed the need to connect students with career and technical education (CTE) programs.

He praised the new HVAC lab at McCann Technical School, made possible by a $3.1 million state Skills Capital grant, as a significant contribution to both the school and the community. “This facility creates a workforce pipeline,” Tutwiler said, adding that it will provide technical training to 100 students annually and offer opportunities for adult learners as well.

Workforce Development and Economic Impact of STEM Education

Darin Almeida, a member of McCann’s advisory committee and representative of Laureyns United Heating & Cooling Inc., echoed the importance of HVAC training, stating that the demand for skilled professionals extends beyond the Berkshires. Almeida emphasized the value of the program in addressing workforce shortages in HVAC, as identified in the Berkshire County Workforce Blueprint. He noted that graduates would not only gain financial stability but also the personal satisfaction of contributing to a vital industry.

The new 5,500-square-foot lab, equipped with the latest technology, will ensure students receive modern training. During the event, Secretary Tutwiler toured the facility and interacted with freshmen exploring their options, including 14-year-old Gabriel Sinopoli, who demonstrated his newly acquired skills. Tutwiler expressed his admiration for the school’s efforts to expand vocational education and workforce training programs in Massachusetts.
