Casey Cuny, a veteran high school English teacher in California, says, “The cheating is off the charts. It’s the worst I’ve seen in my entire career.” He and other educators now assume that any assignment given outside of class may be completed using AI tools. As a result, many are shifting toward in-class assignments where student work can be monitored more closely.
Students, meanwhile, are navigating unclear rules. Some rely on AI for research, outlining, or editing, but question whether this crosses into dishonest territory. Lily Brown, a college sophomore, said she often feels guilty asking AI to summarize texts or outline essays. “If I write in my own words and ask for editing help, is that cheating?” she wonders, noting that syllabus guidelines are vague and inconsistent. This reflects how students’ use of AI often falls into a gray area without clear institutional policies.
This uncertainty is further compounded by school policies that vary widely from classroom to classroom. For example, some teachers permit the use of grammar-checking tools like Grammarly, while others ban them entirely. As AI literacy becomes more important, students struggle to distinguish between acceptable and prohibited uses, with many hesitant to seek clarification for fear of being labeled dishonest.
Educators Revamp Teaching Methods to Adapt
In response to the growing prevalence of AI, many schools are overhauling their teaching and assessment methods. High school teachers like Cuny and Kelly Gibson in Oregon are emphasizing in-class writing and verbal assessments to ensure students engage directly with learning materials. “These days, I can’t do that. That’s almost begging teenagers to cheat,” Gibson said, describing how homework-based assignments often invite misuse and highlight the risks tied to student use of AI.
Universities are also updating policies to better guide students and faculty. UC Berkeley has encouraged instructors to clearly state their expectations regarding AI use in course syllabi, providing sample language to cover scenarios where AI is banned, partially allowed, or fully integrated. The goal is to reduce confusion and ensure that students understand what constitutes appropriate use.
Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College has seen a rise in academic responsibility violations linked to AI, especially cases where students unintentionally crossed lines. Rebekah Fitzsimmons, chair of the AI faculty advising committee, explained that some students, unaware that tools like DeepL translate and alter language, inadvertently submit work flagged by AI detectors. This has led faculty to become cautious in handling suspected violations, balancing enforcement with fairness.
Recognizing that strict bans on AI may be impractical, many educators are redesigning coursework to prevent misuse. Some have abandoned take-home tests in favor of in-class quizzes using lockdown browsers that block access to other resources. Others are adopting “flipped classrooms,” where students complete assignments during class time under supervision.
Emily DeJeu, a communication professor, noted, “To expect an 18-year-old to exercise great discipline is unreasonable; that’s why it’s up to instructors to put up guardrails.”
With AI continuing to reshape how students learn, schools are increasingly focused on fostering responsible use while maintaining academic rigor.
