The newly established Vatican AI Commission held its first meeting in Rome, bringing together leaders from multiple Holy See institutions to coordinate AI initiatives, address ethical challenges, and develop guidelines that support human dignity and the common good.

Vatican Launches Coordinated AI Initiative

The meeting took place at Palazzo San Calisto and marked the official start of the Interdicasterial Commission on Artificial Intelligence. Representatives attended from the Dicasteries for the Doctrine of the Faith, Culture and Education, Communication, and Promoting Integral Human Development, along with delegates from the Pontifical Academies for Life, Sciences, and Social Sciences.

The Vatican AI Commission aims to strengthen collaboration among Vatican institutions studying and using artificial intelligence. Participants shared ongoing projects, identified common priorities, and discussed ways to ensure AI development aligns with the Church’s mission.

“The aim was to share ongoing initiatives, identify common priorities, and define the first steps” toward promoting artificial intelligence that serves “human dignity, the common good, and the mission of the Church,” organizers said.

The Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development will coordinate the Vatican AI Commission during its first year.

Church Highlights AI Opportunities and Risks

Cardinal Michael Czerny, prefect of the coordinating dicastery, opened the meeting by identifying four key issues surrounding artificial intelligence: its rapid development, its effect on human dignity, expanding dialogue between the Church and technology companies, and the influence of the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas.

Participants said artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities but also creates growing ethical, social, cultural, and environmental challenges. They stressed the importance of careful discernment as AI technologies continue to evolve.

Representatives also presented research and educational initiatives examining the scientific, ethical, and societal effects of artificial intelligence.

The meeting recalled earlier Vatican efforts on AI governance, including the Congress on AI Ethics, the Rome Call for AI Ethics, and the Holy Father’s message on artificial intelligence and peace for the 2024 World Day of Peace.

Commission Plans, Guidelines, and Future Collaboration

Members agreed that the Vatican AI Commission will serve two primary functions. Internally, it will coordinate information sharing and reflection on AI across Vatican institutions. Externally, it will support discernment and provide guidance for AI-related initiatives throughout the Church.

Participants also emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue with academic, scientific, and business communities, as well as bishops’ conferences worldwide. They said the Church’s response to artificial intelligence should continue evolving alongside broader social and technological changes.

The commission also discussed creating a dedicated website to share information and promote collaboration across institutions.

As its initial priorities, the Vatican AI Commission will map existing AI initiatives, collect key themes from participating organizations, and begin drafting guidelines for the responsible use of artificial intelligence within the Holy See.

Participants expressed appreciation for the inaugural meeting, saying it provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen coordination among Vatican offices.

The commission is scheduled to meet again in mid-July.
