Kunal Dalal, a former educator and current administrator at the Orange County Department of Education in California, highlights the “archaic” nature of the current education system. He explains that teachers are overwhelmed and underpaid, which leads to students graduating without the necessary skills for the modern workforce. According to Dalal, teachers are tasked with ensuring students pass standardized tests, which often do not correlate with real-world skills. This creates a disconnect between education and employment readiness, making it difficult for teachers to fulfill their dual roles of imparting academic knowledge and preparing students for the workforce.

Dalal believes that AI can help bridge this gap by freeing up time for teachers and students to focus on both academic content and job-related skills. He mentions efforts in Orange County to implement apprenticeship programs for high school students, aiming to prepare them for the job market while allowing teachers to concentrate on delivering high-quality, personalized education.

Streamlining AI in Education

To address these challenges, Dalal suggests that the first step is to streamline teachers’ tasks using AI. This technology can assist with parent communications, lesson planning, and administrative duties, giving teachers more time to focus on their core responsibilities. Dalal emphasizes that schools need to redefine their goals, determining what skills and abilities a graduate should possess and then working backward to achieve these outcomes.

In Orange County, schools are undergoing significant transformations due to AI, shifting from monitoring students to fostering a more trusting and collaborative environment. For instance, one district has abandoned AI detectors that eroded trust and now encourages students to openly share how they use AI in their work. This shift aims to create a more inclusive educational atmosphere.

Aman Sahota and Henry Fu, co-founders of the education technology platform Factors, highlight the evolving roles of educators and administrators in the AI era. According to Sahota, administrators will be responsible for vetting AI tools and ensuring they focus on the desired topics. Teachers will transition from content creators to facilitators, guiding students through personalized learning experiences curated by AI. Fu adds that AI will act as a co-pilot, providing instruction and freeing up teachers to focus on individual student needs, thus enhancing the learning experience.

Data Privacy and the Future of AI in Education

The rollout of AI in education has not been without its issues. The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) launched a $6 million AI chatbot named Ed to personalize learning and address learning gaps. However, concerns were raised about the chatbot’s handling of student data, including the inclusion of unnecessary personal information and potential violations of student privacy rules. Dalal shares these concerns, emphasizing the importance of exercising caution when dealing with student information.

For Fu, data privacy is paramount, and he advocates for AI systems to follow the same principles as traditional systems, such as deleting data upon request. However, he notes the unique challenge posed by AI that uses reinforcement learning, which can leave a residue of data within the AI model. To address this, Factors avoids practices that could embed student information within AI, aligning with data privacy laws.

Despite these challenges, AI offers exciting possibilities for education. Sahota and Fu believe that by providing clear context and aligning AI-generated content with established educational standards, educators can build trust in AI as a tool. Practical applications of AI in schools are already emerging, particularly in administrative functions, where AI can streamline data collection and analysis, offering valuable insights into student performance.

Dalal underscores the importance of equipping students and parents to use AI responsibly. He suggests using AI as a tool for social-emotional health and positive reinforcement, advocating for a healthy AI assistant that can provide advice and support. Dalal also highlights his book, “The AI Parent,” as a resource for parents navigating this evolving technological landscape alongside their children.

The future of AI in education depends on its ability to provide personalized, optimized learning experiences while maintaining data privacy and ethical standards. As educators and administrators adapt to this new landscape, the potential for AI to transform education becomes increasingly tangible.
