India has become the world’s fifth most represented higher education system in the India QS Rankings 2027, with 52 universities featured, reflecting rapid growth in research output, global competitiveness, and higher education participation.

The latest QS World University Rankings, released Thursday, include more than 1,500 institutions across 106 countries. India now ranks behind only the United States, the United Kingdom, mainland China, and Germany in the number of institutions represented.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi emerged as India’s highest-ranked institution at 118th globally. The institute improved its standing while matching the highest rank ever achieved by an Indian university in the rankings.

India Expands Global Higher Education Presence

India’s representation in the rankings has grown from 14 institutions in 2017 to 52 in 2027, a 271% increase over the past decade. According to QS, this marks the fastest proportional growth among G20 nations.

More than half of India’s previously ranked universities improved their positions this year. QS reported that 52% of ranked Indian institutions moved up, while 18 universities achieved their highest-ever rankings.

The India QS Rankings 2027 showed that 26 Indian universities improved their positions, nine remained stable, 15 declined, and two entered the rankings for the first time.

“India’s growth in global higher education is not simply an IIT story,” QS said in a statement, pointing to broader gains across the country’s university sector.

Research and Employability Drive Gains

India also strengthened its performance in research and employer recognition indicators. Eleven Indian universities ranked among the world’s top 100 for Citations per Faculty, a measure of research impact.

Six Indian institutions placed among the global top 100 for Employer Reputation, reflecting growing confidence among employers in Indian graduates.

QS said India’s large youth population, expanding participation in higher education, and increasing research output are helping fuel its rise. The country now has the world’s third-largest research output base.

IIT Delhi was followed by IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and the Indian Institute of Science among India’s leading institutions in the India QS Rankings 2027.

Global Leaders Hold Top Positions

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology retained the No. 1 position. Stanford University climbed to a tie for second place alongside Imperial College London.

The United States and the United Kingdom continued to dominate the rankings, although several Asian institutions improved their positions. The National University of Singapore ranked 10th globally, while universities in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan also featured prominently in the top 50.

The rankings highlighted differing trends among major higher education systems. While 67% of ranked U.S. institutions and 78% of German institutions recorded declines, India posted one of the strongest improvement rates among leading countries.

The United States led all countries with 184 ranked institutions, followed by the United Kingdom with 93, mainland China with 85, and Germany with 60. India placed fifth with 52 universities.

The India QS Rankings 2027 indicate a changing global higher education landscape, with emerging systems gaining visibility through stronger research performance and expanding international recognition.
