The Public High School Rankings 2026 cover public high schools across the United States, including traditional schools, magnet programs and charter schools. The results show strong representation from specialized schools focused on science, technology, advanced academics and college preparation.

Rankings Cover Nearly 18,000 Public High Schools

The 2026-27 rankings examined around 27,000 eligible public high schools and ranked nearly 18,000 of them at the national, state, and local levels. The evaluation used the most recent available data from the 2023-24 school year.

The methodology considers six main performance indicators, including state test results, graduation rates, college readiness, curriculum breadth, student outcomes, and equity across student groups.

College readiness includes participation and performance in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams. The rankings also evaluate performance across different student groups rather than relying on a single measure.

The Public High School Rankings 2026 also reveal broader state and regional trends. Massachusetts had the highest share of its ranked high schools in the national top quarter, at 47%. New Jersey followed at 44%, while Maryland reached 43%.

Specialized Schools Remain Prominent Among Top Performers

Several schools near the top of the list specialize in advanced academic or STEM education. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, for example, ranks No. 6 nationally and remains one of the highest-ranked public schools in Virginia.

School Without Walls High School, ranked No. 5 nationally, also holds the top public high school position in Washington, D.C. The school offers Advanced Placement courses, dual-enrollment opportunities, and a college-focused academic program.

The Public High School Rankings 2026 provide families a national comparison of public high schools, but they do not measure every factor that can affect a student’s experience. Program offerings, admissions requirements, location, and school size can differ significantly among highly ranked schools.

The new list provides a broad starting point for comparing academic performance and college-readiness outcomes as families consider high school options for the 2026-27 school year.
