Key Takeaways

  • U.S. News ranked about 46,000 elementary and 24,000 middle schools.
  • The Best Elementary Schools 2027 rankings use direct state data on all proficiency levels.
  • Districts need three ranked schools, two in the top 75%, to qualify.

U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings on Oct. 20, covering about 46,000 elementary schools and more than 24,000 middle schools across the country.

The rankings place public schools at the state and district levels. Charter schools also have their own state rankings in a separate category. The list compares schools within each state, so it does not produce one national ranking.

New Data Gives a Fuller View of Student Performance

This year, the rankings draw on publicly available data that RTI International collected directly from state education agencies. They also include data from the U.S. Department of Education. Last year’s edition took its state assessment results from the department’s EdFacts initiative.

The updated approach for Best elementary schools 2027 measures reading and math performance across all proficiency levels. Earlier rankings gave a narrower picture of state-test performance.

Eric Brooks, U.S. News director of education data analysis, said the direct state data offers a “richer, more complete picture” of how schools drive student growth. He said families, educators, and community leaders now have a clearer view of academic achievement. He added that the data helps them identify schools that set high standards and support continued success for all students.

How the Rankings Measure Schools

The methodology looks at student performance in math and reading/language arts. It also weighs student demographic context. This combination measures both overall achievement and how effective a school is.

The rankings still account for student background and for absolute performance on state assessments. Absolute performance shows how many students meet state standards, whatever their background. Student background helps show how a school performs compared with what experts expect.

When two schools have the same overall score, the student-teacher ratio breaks the tie. Schools with lower ratios place higher in those cases.

District Rankings and Family Guides

District-level rankings follow stricter rules. A district must have at least three ranked elementary or middle schools. At least two of those schools must place in the top 75% of the overall state rankings.

The rule keeps district rankings from resting on a single strong school. It rewards districts where several schools perform well.

U.S. News also published guides for parents and caregivers of school-age children seeking information on Best elementary schools 2027. One guide looks at where kindergarten is mandatory and whether it should be. Another offers strategies to help middle schoolers move smoothly into high school.

Families can search the full lists by school, district, and state on the U.S. News website. Educators and local leaders can also use the rankings to compare schools within their own state.
