A New Vision for Education
In November 2021, UNESCO’s International Commission on the Futures of Education unveiled a pivotal report titled “Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract for Education.” This report, which builds on the foundational 1972 Faure Report and the 1996 Delors Report, aims to revitalize education to address contemporary global challenges and envision a more equitable and sustainable future. H.E. Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde, President of Ethiopia and Chair of the International Commission emphasized the report’s purpose, stating, “Our hope is that the proposals this report presents – as well as the public dialogue and collective action it calls for – will serve as a catalyst to shape futures for humanity and the planet that are peaceful, just, and sustainable.”
The report highlights that current educational models, which emphasize knowledge transmission from teachers in traditional classroom settings, were designed when life expectancy was shorter and technological advances were slower. Today, education must evolve to support lifelong learning and adapt to rapid technological and societal changes.
Addressing Urgent Challenges
The Futures of Education Report underscores the need for education systems to adapt to pressing global issues such as the climate crisis, the rise of generative AI technologies, ongoing inequalities, and persistent conflicts. It argues that education must be reimagined to address these challenges effectively and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable futures. Given the unique conditions in each Member State, the report calls for a collaborative approach where countries work together to tackle shared educational challenges.
The Forum on the Futures of Education 2024 will focus on how education can be transformed to meet these new demands. By engaging in dialogue and sharing strategies, Member States aim to develop solutions that are adaptable to various contexts while addressing common global concerns.
Key Questions for Educational Reform
The report poses three critical questions to guide the reimagining of education: “What should we continue doing?”, “What should we abandon?”, and “What needs to be creatively reimagined?”. These questions are designed to prompt reflection and innovation in education systems worldwide.
The International Forum will provide a platform for discussing these questions, encouraging participants to share their insights and experiences. By exploring diverse responses and solutions, the Forum seeks to foster a collective effort in renewing education and transforming the future. The goal is to ensure that education systems are equipped to handle current and future challenges, ultimately contributing to a more just and sustainable world.
The Forum’s collaborative approach will be crucial in shaping education’s role in addressing global issues and ensuring that it remains relevant in an ever-changing world.
