Weather Advisory and Travel Warnings
A winter storm is set to impact North Jersey, bringing snow, sleet, and freezing rain overnight into Thursday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m., warning residents of hazardous road conditions. Snow and sleet accumulations are expected to range between one to two inches in some areas.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation has urged commuters to exercise caution, emphasizing that icy roads could make the morning commute treacherous. Authorities are advising residents to allow extra travel time and adhere to speed limits. In response to the forecast, several North Jersey schools have announced delayed openings and closures for Thursday, February 6. Additionally, some county and state offices have adjusted their schedules, while a few sporting events, such as Morris County Tournament second-round basketball games, were rescheduled to Wednesday.
Schools with Delayed Openings
Numerous school districts across North Jersey will start the school day later than usual due to the winter weather conditions. Among those affected are Allendale, Bayonne, Belleville, Bergenfield, Bloomfield, Caldwell-West Caldwell, Clifton, East Rutherford, Fair Lawn, Hackensack, Irvington, Jersey City, Kearny, Livingston, Montclair, Newark, Nutley, Paramus, Paterson, Teaneck, Wayne, West Orange, and Woodland Park. Colleges and universities, including Montclair State University and Seton Hall University, are also implementing delayed openings.
In addition to schools, several government offices and community centers will open later than usual. Bergen County offices, New Jersey state offices (including the Motor Vehicle Commission), Sussex County offices, and the Newton Municipal Building are among the facilities operating on a delayed schedule.
School Closures Across the Region
Some school districts have opted to cancel classes entirely due to the adverse weather conditions. Among them are Andover, Bloomingdale, Boonton, Chatham, Denville, Dover, Fairview, Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock, Mahwah, Montville, Randolph, Ridgewood, Roxbury, Sparta, Vernon, and Wyckoff. Catholic Academy of Sussex County, County College of Morris, and Ramapo College will also be closed, though Ramapo College will conduct classes remotely.
The storm’s impact extends beyond schools, affecting local government operations and community centers. Residents are advised to stay updated on further announcements as conditions evolve throughout the day. With freezing temperatures and slippery roads expected, authorities continue to stress the importance of caution for those traveling on Thursday.
