STEM Education Poised to Transform Ghana
Rev. Fordjour recently highlighted the bright future awaiting Ghana, attributing much of the country’s potential growth to its increasing focus on STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). His remarks came during the graduation ceremony for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates from Young Executive School (YES) and Onua Francis International School in Kasoa, Central Region. Fordjour emphasized that the STEM policy is designed to equip students with essential skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. He applauded private schools for their commitment to this transformative policy and assured that those needing assistance would receive support in advancing STEM education for Ghanaian children.
At the ceremony, 236 students celebrated their achievements, with 166 from YES and the remainder from Onua Francis International School. The event, themed “Equipping the Young Generation through Quality Education for a Better Tomorrow,” underscored the focus on preparing students for future success through innovative and forward-thinking educational practices. Fordjour’s words reflected a deep belief in the power of STEM education to effect positive change and drive national development.
Impact of STEM on Future Innovation
Fordjour expressed strong optimism about the potential of STEM education to foster innovation and produce the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs in Ghana. Drawing comparisons to renowned figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates, he highlighted how STEM education could lead to significant advancements and breakthroughs. Fordjour pointed out that by integrating STEM into the curriculum, Ghana is not only nurturing future inventors and industrialists but also supporting the broader development of the country.
The emphasis on STEM, he argued, is vital for Ghana’s progress and has been met with enthusiasm by the education sector. Fordjour commended the strides being made in adopting 21st-century learning environments at various schools across the country. He stressed the importance of continuous support and investment in educational practices to ensure that the benefits of STEM education reach all students, thus contributing to the overall growth and advancement of the nation.
Education Must Remain Apolitical
In addition to celebrating the achievements of the graduates, Fordjour addressed a critical issue: the need to keep education free from political influence. He argued that education is a fundamental pillar of the nation’s future and should not be subjected to political maneuvering. Fordjour urged that the focus should remain on equipping students with values and skills that are pertinent to their personal and professional development, rather than being swayed by political affiliations. “Children at this stage are unaware of political parties like the New Patriotic Party or National Democratic Congress, so let’s prioritize 21st-century learning and values that will benefit them throughout their lives,” he emphasized.
Noble Francis Essel Okyeahene, Director of YES and Onua Francis International School, also addressed the new graduates, advising them to exhibit good manners and positive behavior as they awaited their examination results. He emphasized the importance of maintaining conduct and preparing diligently for the next steps in their educational journey.
