High School Students Prepare for Upcoming Elections

Union High School recently held a voter registration event aimed at empowering its 17- and 18-year-old students to participate in the democratic process. The event, organized in collaboration with the National Association of University Women, Inc., and the Concerned Citizens of Vauxhall and Vicinity, provided eligible students with an opportunity to register to vote in a streamlined process on campus.

The event was a joint effort led by Bob Ghiretti, Supervisor of Social Studies and Business, and Nicole Ahern, Supervisor of School Counseling. Ahern emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that students who will be 18 years old by the time of the upcoming presidential election in November are now registered and ready to cast their votes. “Students who are seventeen or eighteen years old completed the process of becoming registered voters,” she said. This initiative marks a significant step toward engaging young citizens in civic duties at an early age.

Students Embrace the Opportunity to Register

For many students, this registration event was their first step toward becoming active participants in the electoral process. Senior Babadara Olowe shared his positive experience, describing the process as “really easy and smooth.” He emphasized the significance of registering, saying, “I felt it was important to register to take the next step.” The simplicity of the process, coupled with the convenience of registering on campus, encouraged more students to get involved, ensuring they would be ready to vote when the time came.

The event also helped raise awareness about the importance of voting and civic engagement among young people. Many students recognized the significance of their participation, not only in the upcoming presidential election but also in shaping the future of their communities and the country.

Plans for Future Voter Registration Events

Given the success of the registration event, Union High School is already planning to host another session in the spring. Nicole Ahern expressed her enthusiasm for continuing to offer opportunities like this, noting that it fosters a sense of responsibility and engagement among students. “We’re looking forward to hosting another registration event,” Ahern said, highlighting the school’s commitment to encouraging civic participation among its students.

By making voter registration events accessible and straightforward, Union High School is helping to cultivate a new generation of informed and active voters, ready to contribute to the democratic process. The collaboration between school staff and community organizations underscores the value of fostering civic responsibility in young people and ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to participate in elections.
