Ministry Expands AI Training For Teachers
Education and Training Minister Hoàng Minh Sơn said teachers have shown strong interest in learning how to apply AI as part of the Vietnam AI education framework, with training efforts expanding across the country.
The ministry has organized nationwide programmes, including courses that teach teachers how to use AI when preparing lessons. Sơn said teachers initially relied on experts after the shift toward online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 but increasingly learned to use digital tools themselves.
That experience has helped make AI a more familiar part of teaching, he said. The ministry now faces a broader challenge: helping students understand how to use the technology effectively.
“The key question is how students can use AI effectively,” Sơn said, adding that the framework is being developed systematically using materials and expertise from around the world.
New Platform Could Act As Virtual Tutor
Alongside the Vietnam AI education framework, the ministry is developing a national “smart” education platform, with two universities in Hanoi involved in pilot implementation.
The platform is designed to go beyond conventional AI tools that primarily answer questions. It is intended to combine a knowledge repository, an online learning platform and a virtual tutor that can guide students through problems rather than simply provide answers.
Sơn said AI can help students understand subjects more deeply, explore information and strengthen their thinking skills. But he emphasized that its use should remain guided and controlled.
“AI can be used to help students learn more deeply, gain a clearer understanding of issues, explore and search for information and develop their thinking skills,” he said.
The platform is expected to be offered free to schools and the public, which the ministry views as a way to expand access to quality education.
AI To Support Learning, Not Replace It
The approach outlined in the Vietnam AI education framework reflects a growing focus on teaching students how to use AI rather than simply allowing the technology to complete schoolwork for them.
Sơn said students and teachers will need to learn AI through practical use while also learning how to use it better. Without proper guidance, he warned, students could become dependent on AI for tasks requiring their own analysis, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
The national platform is initially expected to focus on mathematics and English before expanding to other subjects. Educational content uploaded to the system will need to follow the general education curriculum and meet requirements for accuracy, reliability and quality control.
The Vietnam AI education framework platform could also help teachers monitor students’ learning and support more personalized instruction. In the longer term, Sơn said, the technology could contribute to an education system in which students may no longer need to take the national high school graduation examination.
