Pioneering Future-Ready Education

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has announced the establishment of its new College of Computing, a strategic initiative aimed at advancing interdisciplinary research and fostering innovation. This new college, set to open its doors on September 1, 2024, marks a significant step in CityUHK’s mission to bolster Hong Kong’s role as a global innovation and technology hub. The College of Computing is designed to drive progress in various computing-related fields, such as Computer Science, Data Science, Biostatistics, and Bioinformatics, with a strong focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The creation of the College of Computing reflects the City University of Hong Kong’s recognition of the increasing convergence of these disciplines and their critical role in shaping the future of technology and societal transformation. By elevating these fields to a college-level platform, CityUHK aims to enhance collaboration among faculty members and underscore the importance of computing in advancing educational and scientific goals.

Strengthening Interdisciplinary Collaboration

The new College will initially incorporate three key units: the Department of Biostatistics, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Data Science. The Department of Biostatistics will transition from the College of Science, the Department of Computer Science will move from the College of Engineering, and the Department of Data Science will be restructured from the existing School of Data Science. Despite these organizational changes, the City University of Hong Kong has assured that all current undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as their respective requirements, will remain unchanged to ensure a seamless transition for students.

Professor Freddy Boey, President of the City University of Hong Kong, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “The convergence of interdisciplinary fields has become increasingly important in education. The establishment of the College of Computing, which will bring together interdisciplinary talent, is a strategic, forward-looking move to nurture the next generation of technology innovators, scholars, and pioneers.” He added that the new college is expected to play a crucial role in responding to global digital transformation, workforce demands, and enhancing research and innovation.

Driving Innovation and Global Impact

The formation of the College of Computing aligns with the City University of Hong Kong’s commitment to leading in AI and related disciplines. The university has also recently strengthened its focus on AI through a strategic cooperation framework signed with the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (AIIA) on August 13. This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of both entities in AI and facilitate comprehensive, multi-level cooperation to empower advancements in the field.

Professor Wang Jianping, Dean of the College of Computing (designate), emphasized the college’s vision, stating, “The new College aims to excel in computer science, data science, and statistics, fostering collaborative research to develop advanced analytical tools and AI solutions for global challenges.” She also highlighted the college’s commitment to nurturing a diverse international community, equipping students with the skills and mindset needed to drive impactful change across various industries.

With this new initiative, the City University of Hong Kong is poised to make significant contributions to the advancement of computing education and innovation, positioning itself at the forefront of global educational and scientific progress.
