Denmark Rolls Out New Anti-Cheating Measures
The Danish government announced Thursday that students ages 16 to 19 attending upper secondary schools, known as gymnasiet, must orally defend major written essays completed at home. The policy takes effect immediately as students prepare to return to school after the summer break next week.
Education Minister Magnus Heunicke said the government acted because artificial intelligence has become a growing challenge for schools and examinations.
“Unfortunately, we have a problem with Denmark AI cheating in upper secondary schools,” Heunicke said. “Action is needed now.”
The Education Ministry said the measures are intended to establish clearer rules on when students are not allowed to use AI while completing schoolwork.
Schools Increase Supervision During Assignments and Exams
The government is also encouraging schools to have students complete more written assignments on campus under controlled conditions instead of at home. Schools are expected to monitor students’ work, provide feedback during the writing process, and improve the accuracy of academic assessment.
About 9,000 upper secondary students complete Denmark’s major written assignment, known as the større skriftlige opgave, each year. Those students will now be required to explain and defend their work during an oral examination. The ministry said it will work with schools to determine how the oral defenses should be conducted, reinforcing measures against Denmark AI cheating.
Upper secondary schools also must use monitoring tools during written examinations to oversee computer use. Schools are required to install firewalls that restrict access to online resources through the school network during exams and classroom instruction.
Government Plans Broader AI Strategy for Education
The Education Ministry said it is developing a national strategy covering AI use across schools and the broader education sector to address Denmark AI cheating while encouraging responsible AI adoption.
Heunicke said he plans to consult schools, teachers and students while the strategy is developed.
“We must ensure that AI does not undermine students’ competencies, professionalism and, not least, the ability to think for themselves,” Heunicke said.
The announcement comes as education systems worldwide continue to adapt to the rapid adoption of generative AI tools. Danish officials said the new measures are designed to preserve academic integrity while providing schools with clearer guidance on acceptable AI use and addressing Denmark AI cheating.
